What counts as an eye emergency?
Certain eye problems require immediate attention to protect your vision. In our office, the following situations are considered eye emergencies and should be evaluated as soon as possible:
- Sudden vision loss (partial or complete), including blurred or distorted vision
- Eye injuries such as cuts, scratches, or blunt trauma
- Foreign objects in the eye, especially metal or debris that cannot be safely rinsed out
- Severe eye pain, pressure, or sudden discomfort
- Signs of infection such as red, swollen, or irritated eyes accompanied by discharge, foreign body sensation or light sensitivity
- Flashes of light, visual floaters, or a shadow in your vision, which could indicate a retinal issue
- Sudden double vision or trouble focusing
What if I need surgery or more advanced care?
